Artwork Details

One of the classical dances of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta created by the Sultan himself, Sultan Hamengku Buwana X (1989-present). This dance was created to commemorate the previous King, Sultan Hamengku Buwana IX. It depicts a philosophical concept, that a king should always keep his promises, be strong, be fair, be tolerant, do good deeds and have a social spirit. Bedoyo Amurwabhumi is performed by nine female dancers and lasts for two and a half hours. It is accompanied by a dramatic rhythm that depicts gentleness and elegance as part of the king's leadership and devotion to his people.
