About the Artist

Aly Waffa is a contemporary Indonesian visual artist whose practice occupies the intersection of decorative surrealism and symbolic storytelling. Distinguished by his signature scraping technique, Waffa creates richly textured paintings inhabited by intricate networks of roots, miniature human figures, livestock, and fantastical creatures. Through these layered compositions, he constructs poetic visual narratives that invite viewers into imaginative worlds shaped by memory, spirituality, and the complexities of everyday life.

Central to Waffa's artistic vocabulary is the recurring motif of roots, which serve as a metaphor for the unseen foundations that sustain human existence. Hidden beneath the surface yet essential to growth and continuity, roots symbolize resilience, interconnectedness, and the invisible forces that shape both individual and collective experience. This symbolism is deeply informed by the artist's observations of his natural surroundings and the mining communities of his hometown, where themes of labor, survival, and coexistence continue to influence his work.

Waffa's distinctive scraping technique lends his paintings a tactile quality, producing textured surfaces that blur the boundaries between drawing and painting. The intricate details and rhythmic patterns within his compositions reveal a meticulous process of construction and erasure, creating visual spaces that are at once playful, contemplative, and enigmatic.

Since 2016, Waffa has steadily developed his artistic language, expanding both the conceptual depth and visual complexity of his practice. His works from recent years demonstrate an ongoing exploration of identity, human relationships, and the interconnectedness between humanity and nature, positioning him as a distinctive voice within contemporary Indonesian art.

Over the course of his career, Waffa has participated in numerous exhibitions across Indonesia and internationally, including presentations at Art Jakarta, the National Gallery of Indonesia, and the Affordable Art Fair in Kuala Lumpur. Through his evolving body of work, he continues to explore the hidden structures that underpin human existence, transforming everyday observations into evocative and deeply symbolic visual experiences.
