There was a hushed stillness in this part of the woods, all life spoke in whispers here. The little snails looked up in awe at the towering statue of the Buddha. Tiny snails in stone were making their way slowly up the statue, some had already reached the head of the Lord .
Father snail : "Look children, the revered ones. Their selfless deed has led them to salvation and glory."
"Can you please tell us the story again, Father." piped a little voice, from the littlest of them all.

One day Lord Buddha sat down under a tree and started to meditate. The hot midday sun shone on his shorn head but the lord was deep in thought.
A passing snail observed the lord and thought the hot rays of the sun would soon disrupt the lords meditation. Without a thought, he decided to make his way up and cool the Lord's head with his moist body. Other snails followed him to protect the lord from the heat of the sun. The moisture from their bodies kept the Lord cool but the heat from the relentless sun soon dried the snails and they eventually died.
108 snails had formed a cap around Buddha’s head to ensure his uninterrupted meditation. Their sacrifice made them martyrs and has forever earned them pride of place atop the Lords head.
Hence they are depicted in statues and art alike crowning the Buddha’s head as curls.
