Oka Astawa is an Indonesian artist who creates powerful abstract works in vibrant colors. His life experiences of living in farmlands and close to nature is evident in how he passionately employs nature as the main theme in his artworks. His paintings are characterized by splashing and melting techniques that represent various contextual elements like nature, spirit, fire, cityscapes, landscapes and a multitude of complex emotions. He creates resonances between the powerful attributes of color, form and texture. His abstract pieces creates a universe of their own evoking an abundance of instinctive emotional responses and narratives that vary for each viewer.
Born in Bali, Oka is very proud of the Balinese culture and its local wisdom that strongly advocates sustainability and conservation of nature which has laid a strong foundation to his philosophical convictions.
Fun Fact:
He founded an art movement called the Oka Art Project in 2011, which aims to provide a space to collaborate with his fellow artists, to experiment and explore various media of art, and to move forward and thrive as an art community. He still expends his unending art energies through this project.
