Renuka Sondhi Gulati grew up in Pathankot and was first inspired by Amrita Sher-Gil’s paintings during a childhood visit to the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. She later moved to Delhi, where she studied contemporary art under Rameshwar Broota and Sanjay Roy and began practising professionally in 2005.
Her work is rooted in nature, feminine power, and the human form, often combining texture, colour, and symbolic imagery. Working across oil, acrylic, fibreglass, stone, and bronze, she has developed a palette centred on whites and silvers, balancing transparent softness with detailed opaque effects. Her evolving style remains introspective, rhythmic, and contemporary, shaped by influences such as Frida Kahlo, Klimt, Rameshwar Broota, Anupam Sood, Amrita Sher-Gil, and Anjolie Ela Menon.
A recurring theme in her work is The Living Ark, in which animals and other species appear within logs of wood to reflect humanity’s responsibility toward nature and the need for ecological balance. Her art presents a global perspective, using visual language to encourage empathy, dialogue, sustainability, and environmental awareness.
She has completed major commissions for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation across 13 locations, along with installations for NABARD and large-scale sculptures for Omaxe and Space Builders. Renuka is a winner of the IAC Art Fair Grant 2024, Indian Art Circle, Art Santa Fe, and World Health Congress New York, and was also selected for a residency programme at Rashtrapati Bhawan in 2024. A National Senior Fellow of the Ministry of Culture from 2012 to 2014, she is the recipient of several awards and has displayed her work at various prestigious galleries in India and abroad.
Renuka has held numerous solo shows, including two in the USA, and has participated in several group exhibitions. Her work was selected among the top six artists of the world for the month in the Inspiration from Isolation contest in 2020, and she was awarded digital representation at a New York-based gallery.
