Ataraxia - is a Greek term first used in Ancient Greek philosophy by Pyrrho and subsequently Epicurus and the Stoics for a lucid state of robust equanimity ("unperturbedness", "equanimity", or "tranquility") characterized by ongoing freedom from distress and worry. Ataraxia is a sense of balance and calm, especially in times of uncertainty and crisis. In ancient times, Ataraxia was often used to describe the ideal state of mind of a soldier going into battle. The concept of Ataraxia was first used in a philosophical context by Pyrrho (365–275 BC), a Greek philosopher. Pyrrho was traveling on a ship when a storm struck. His fellow passengers were frightened and stressed as the enermous waves tossed the ship about. But Pyrrho remained calm and composed as he watched a pig on the boat eating away blissfully. Everybody, including the animals onboard had no control over the situation. However, different states of mind, is what discriminated their reaction to the very same situation. Pyrrho had supposedly developed his ideas from Indian philosophers while traveling with Alexander the Great's army as it conquered eastward. This story of Pyrrho on the ship is fitting for modern times too.
