Minimalism art emerged in the early 1960's amongst artists in New York as a process of reductive abstract art and characterized by simplicity and attention to the subject of art. Frank Stella's series of Black Paintings is a key piece of minimalist art and one of the first pieces to exemplify the movement of Minimalist Art. A monochrome rectangular painting magnetized the viewers and drew their attention to details which he created using plain, commercial paint and brushes similar to the materials he used for his day job as a house painter.
Pop Art was gaining popularity simultaneously while minimalism presented literal art that was criticized for lack of expressive features or even metaphor. The most iconic artists of Minimalist art created canvases with abrupt transitions, geometric forms, colors, and repetitive patterns. Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, and Robert Ryman are some of the many iconic artists of this art movement.
